Ulysses S. Grant was a man superbly fitted by character and background for his role as military leader. He moved unsteadily into the nation's highest office in the period of confusion and great change after the Civil War. But as a civilian the very qualities that made him a great soldier proved a liability. His career thus throws light on a large section of American history.
